“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.” 2nd Chronicles 7:14
America, land of the free and home of the brave, once a nation that stood for the freedoms of the people and once a land after Gods own heart, is suffering. Today, it is a nation plagued by sin and oppressions of the rights our Founding Fathers fought and gave their lives for. Our government has legalized the murder of babies and made homosexuality not only acceptable, but also legal and encouraged. They have made it wrong for us to discuss our religious beliefs in public and to stand on the beliefs we hold in our heart. People find the Bible offensive, God’s message unacceptable, and the church a home of haters and hypocrites. But why? Why has our nation fallen so far from the values and beliefs it was built upon, and why are those very beliefs hated now? The answer is us.
We, the people of the United States of America: the Baptists, the Methodists, the Presbyterians, the Evangelicals, the Catholics, and every other religion, have failed. We have failed to fight for our rights when they were just beginning to be oppressed. We have failed to speak out against the sin that our nation was legalizing. We have failed to do the most basic aspect in our religions: spreading God’s Word. We have failed God, we have failed our country, and we have failed each other. We have failed to provide for the posterity of our country, and we have failed to protect the liberties that allow us to openly practice our beliefs. We took for granted the freedoms we had and failed to see the need that arose when the world started to take them away.
Our Founding Fathers envisioned America as “a city upon a hill” and as a beacon of light to a lost and dieing world. They saw America as a place of refuge for those seeking religious liberties. Our nation’s original citizens were religious dissidents from all over the world and our greatest leaders were followers of God.
Psalms 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.” We have lost God’s blessing on our country because we have turned from Him. When we think back to the generation that fought World War II, the “greatest generation,” we see that they were great because of their devotion to God. Go back to the time of the Revolutionary War and we see the hope in God that gave the revolutionists strength to keep fighting.
It is time for us to stand up for our rights. Throughout our history there have been multiple equality movements: movements for women equality and suffrage, for racial equality, and for no more slavery. It’s time for a religious equality movement. The time is now, for if we don’t, future generations will not be able to openly practice their beliefs. We are almost at that point now. We can no longer sit idly by and allow the people in this nation to push us down and knock us out.
Our governments authority comes from the consent of the people. It can’t make decisions without our consent, and it can’t press towards a goal that we are not already pressing towards. If it wasn’t for churches today straying farther and farther from their beliefs, our nation would not be in the predicament it is in now. If it wasn’t for the churches fear of standing for their beliefs, our government would not be oppressing our right to stand for them.
It is time for revival. Time for us to beg God to forgive us for our apathy and our shame of Him. Time for us to beg Him to heal our once great nation and to make it great again. God has given us an opportunity to make things right. It’s up to us, the “religious,” to fix things. To change the direction that we are headed in as a country. We need revival, redemption, and restoration. It is only God that can do these three things. How can we get God to hear our plea?
By doing exactly as 2nd Chronicles 7:14 says. We need to humble ourselves, pray and seek God once again, and turn from our wickedness. And we need to stand for Him and speak out against the wickedness in this nation. We need to ground ourselves in God’s Word, and once again learn its truths. We need to turn back to God, and He will turn back to us. This is the only way. The time is now!
