Your teamwork agreement must be made accessible and easy to maintain by all team members. It`s easy to forget something you`ve only seen once in a meeting. Find creative ways to get the most important elements of your agreement consistently in your team`s line of sight. One way to do this is to create a mural in the main work area where the instructions are displayed. As I wanted to do SM to facilitate the process, I coached her to create a list of questions for each value, to generate a discussion and to help teams decide on all the “rules” we should create to ensure that everyone respects that value. We didn`t care where the answers were placed as long as they were captured. The SM asked the questions and collected the answers, while the team voted on the points to be formalized in a working agreement. In this regard, the SM was able to summarize what was most appreciated by the collective team (see Table 2). There is no formal or correct way to create work agreements, so Steve uses the approach I share in my workshops.
As usual with a ScrumMaster, good preparation pays off. Consider informing the team in advance of the agree categories/areas. The Agile team consisted of 11 people, working both locally in Texas and remotely in Mumbai, India. Local members of the Texan team included both MS and PO, as well as two engineers: a tech-lead and a senior developer. They worked from home three days a week, but would be at least two days in our headquarters. The SM and the PO were almost always present at the office. The India team consisted of seven engineers, one of whom was the supervisor and effectively our team leader in India. The other members of the Indian team had various other roles in the development of our solution. The team approached the end of the current sprint and would keep its team in review the next day. Fortunately, the timing worked. I was invited to join the retrospective and meet the entire team.
If they are created with little or no intent, they do not help the group to work better together. Be sure to review and maintain your work agreement. If you opt for a team work agreement, the most important thing is to make sure that your team is fully involved in the whole process. Make sure it is addressed to all “itchy” or uncomfortable topics and that the agreement is placed in a place that is easily accessible to the team. The team members determine the working arrangements themselves. The ScrumMaster may have to play the role of facilitating the meeting that is held to conclude labour agreements, but it is the team that decides the agreements. The team also reviews them regularly during retrospective meetings. The labour agreement should define team standards or disciplines as they relate here. They go on to say, “The purpose of the work agreement is to ensure that the Agile team has a responsibility to set expectations about how they work together and to improve their self-organization process.” This story of self-discovery traced the journey of a team of geographically dispersed and culturally diverse people.
